After Effects is a great program for doing time-remapping, especially if you want to do complex speed ramping. However, if you’re just wanting to stretch the overall speed of your layer,  you can use this quick trick to easily stretch footage in After Effects.

Quick Note: This quick tip is only compatible with After Effects version CC 2015 or higher. May this tutorial serve as an inspiration for you to upgrade to CC 2015. It’s awesome.

Step 1: Select Your Layer

Select the layer which you want to time remap in the timeline. It can be anything: cameras, solids, shapes, footage, etc.

Step 2: Adjust the Stretch Parameter

To adjust the duration of your layer, simply select the blue text under the stretch category in the timeline. You can also stretch your footage negatively in the timeline if you want it to play backward.

Step 3: Adjust to Desired Location in the Timeline

By default, your footage will scale around its first frame. So you will likely have to move your layer around in the timeline to match your needs.

Typography for Motion Graphic Design

Typography is the art of crafting and arranging letterforms. Contrary to popular belief, it’s an art with a history dating back to before the printed page, back to the origins of human writing. The purpose of typography is the conveyance of the written word. This ancient art continues to survive every major technological shift in human history. Today, the written word isn’t shackled by the page but brought to life through motion graphics.

The one constant in motion graphics, regardless of design style, is typography. It is inevitable that motion graphic designers will need to animate text on the screen. The printed page shaped the rules of typography, most of which translates to motion graphics. However, some rules don’t apply as the introduction motion produces new typographic challenges.

A key component of typography is legibility, the ability of the reader to comprehend what is written. Good typography leads the reader through the text, inherently communicating the message. Poor typography works against the reader, confusing them in the process. There are many factors that come into play when determining what is legible. The typeface, font size, color, placement, and spacing are all part of the equation that translates from print to motion design. Movement and timing are factors that aren’t part of the print tradition but are vital elements of motion graphics.

Typefaces are the uniquely styled shapes that makeup letterforms. Typefaces are commonly referred to as fonts, the difference being the font is the actual digital file used to create the typeface. This goes back to the early days of the printing press when a font was a collection of lead letters, displaying a typeface, to be used for physical printing. It’s no different in the digital age. For instance, Helvetica is a typeface, but a user installs the Helvetica font file on their computer to use in their applications. Throughout history, typefaces were designed to take advantage of the technology used to create the fonts and influence the meaning of the printed word.

The shape of the letterform lends itself to the legibility of a typeface. The human visual system is able to recognize words not only by their letters but by their overall shape. Serif typefaces are most commonly used in large blocks of text, such as paragraphs and the page layout of books. This is because the serifs help define the shape of the word and help lead the readers’ eye. Serifed fonts help in motion design when there is title on a screen that can only be up for a short time, but because of digital display resolutions serifs can get muddy and be hard to read at small sizes. Clean sans-serif typefaces, such as those influenced by Swiss typographers, present well on digital displays. The clean lines and well-defined angles of a Swiss-inspired typeface provide contrast and make it easy for the viewer to identify the letterform.

Typeface trends come and go; what’s popular right now may look outdated in several years. There are some typefaces that have generally worn out their welcome. Comic Sans, Papyrus, Copperplate, Curlz and decorative fonts like Bleeding Cowboys are going to look amateur. This doesn’t mean they should never be used. There is a rare instance when a comic book style talk bubble is part of a motion graphic and Comic Sans looks much better inside of it than Myriad Pro. It’s a good rule of thumb to save the overtly stylized typefaces for situations in which they are needed.

Points, Picas, Ems, and More

The world of print bestowed an array of measurements for typography. Motion graphics didn’t inherit this full spectrum, in the digital realm of a video there are two values that measure type size, points (pts) and pixels (px), and those sizes are to an extent arbitrary when creating motion graphics. The size that matters is what shows on screen. There isn’t a locked-in formula for this because screen sizes are different. There’s a difference between screen resolution (i.e. 1080p, 2K, 4K, etc.) and screen size. A phone has a different screen size than a movie theater. Twelve point types might look fine and be perfectly legible on a projected screen, but the same type could be indiscernible if the video is embedded into a small window on a website.

This matter of size applies not only to the font height but also to the weight of the letter. Thin and light fonts are popular in the sparse, minimalist designs trending today. There is a danger when using a thin weight, however, as it doesn’t show well on a small screen to which video is often scaled-down. This results in thin lines disappearing. A thin weight is also problematic with fast movements, the lines run the risk of creating an unintended strobe effect. Again, this doesn’t mean thin weights should not be used, it just means use caution and understands the final delivery of the motion graphic before creating it.

It’s Only a Matter of Time

Motion graphics are a time-based media, visual information is revealed to the audience over a specified and controlled duration. On the printed page, the viewer determines the pace at which they consume what they read. In this way a print typographer is able to block out and fill a page with type, even decreasing its size and placing the text into columns to fit as much legible type on the page as possible. On the video screen, the viewer becomes passive and the pace is determined by the motion graphic designer. For this reason, the motion designer must be aware of how much text is on screen at one time and the pace at which their audience can read it.

When timing text on a screen, the motion graphic designer has to take into consideration their audience and the message they want to convey. If the motion graphic requires the audience to read the text on a screen, such as a title in a lower third, the designer will want the graphic to exist on-screen long enough for the audience to read and understand it. There are times when a motion designer can use typography to influence or support a specific feeling in a sequence. An example would be a single word that violates the frame of the screen while composited into a montage. In this situation, the word on screen may stand out as too influential if it’s viewable for an extended period of time. The motion designer will want to flash the word, so it’s meaning is conveyed but not dominant in the scene.

Kinetic Type and Movement

Good typography is important, but without motion, there are no motion graphics. Kinetic typography, in which animated text is the primary narrative element, is one of the most popular styles of motion graphics. Kinetic typography goes hand in hand with timing. The number of frames a word is on the screen is contingent on what the designer wants the audience to know and feel. The secret to good kinetic typography is for the animation of letters and words to be motivated by the message they imply. Arbitrary animations and movements on the screen will eventually grow wearisome to the audience and will lose their interest.

  • Multichannel EXR files are up to 10-12 times faster, and you can import them as layered compositions. Save time on setup and start composting right away. The new workflow includes native support for Cryptomatte for more power and precision, and there’s even a handy contact sheet view to quickly locate a specific pass.

  • Shape layers are snappier — especially when snapping. Working with complex, shape-heavy compositions is now a much more pleasant experience. And shape grouping and ungrouping are quicker and easier with a new context menu, enabling you to manage multiple shapes at once, right in the timeline.

  • In previous releases, expressions that don’t change over time were still recalculated on every frame, slowing down your composition’s performance. Now, expressions that should only run once actually only run once. You’ll also see a noticeable performance improvement when working with expressions and master properties together. But making expressions more productive isn’t just about speed. We’ve added expression access to text style properties, enabling you to change or customize fonts and styling with expressions, and keep multiple layers in sync. Save your expressions as presets and reuse them again and again.

  • Content-Aware Fill for the video was a big hit when we released it earlier this year. Good news: it’s now twice as fast and uses half as much memory.

There are refinements designed to help you work more efficiently. New custom drop-down menus for expressions enable you to control layer properties with easy-to-read menus. Just like the slider, checkbox and color controls, they work in your compositions, with master properties, and with Motion Graphics templates, giving you and your colleagues a streamlined graphics editing experience. Combine drop-down menus with text style expressions to control the text formatting on multiple layers in one place.

Updated Cinema 4D

The new release of After Effects includes an updated version of Maxon Cinema 4D Lite (based on Cinema 4D Release 21). Use Cinema 4D Lite to create and import 3D content for After Effects projects. Add Cinema 4D content to After Effects projects just like footage; extract scene data, like cameras or 3D objects, which you can manipulate in After Effects.

The latest release of C4D Lite can be launched within After Effects and as a standalone application. New features include the caps and bevel tools for creating extruded text and splines with more personality. A new high-performance denoising filter improves visual quality and reduces rendering times. Cinema 4D gives After Effects users a great way to explore the exciting world of 3D motion graphics — including basic modeling, texturing, lighting, and animation.

Format and system support

After Effects offers new native support for Canon XF-HEVC, as well as import support for two legacy formats: Animation with delta frames and MJPEG. Plus, we’ve improved performance for 10-bit H.265 HD/UHD, HEVC HD/UHD, and ProRes files.

After Effects will now detect and alert you to any known issues with specific hardware or drivers being used on your computer, and help you update to ensure compatibility and optimum performance.

The Making of Motion Graphics

The process of creating a motion graphic is multifaceted, but every step has a key purpose that contributes to a successful end product. Here’s what to expect.

Kickoff

Any creative project should begin with a kickoff meeting. This can take place on the phone, over video conference, or in-person. However it’s hosted, it should be live. Kickoff is an irreplaceable step in ensuring that client and vendor, department head and in-house team, or whoever is engaging in the work, discusses key goals and mandatories in real-time. 

The information exchanged during this meeting would take far more time to gather over email. Yet, even if those details were efficiently squared away by written exchange, emails also don’t allow for the level of rapport-building that hearing real voices — and ideally, seeing real faces — affords in a working relationship. In fact, MIT ranks face-to-face interactions as the most effective form of communication; these are followed by video conference and phone communication. So plan to have at least a phone call, if a video chat or in-person meeting isn’t feasible for your kickoff.

Scripting and Scene Direction

Often the first deliverable in the production of a video, the script and scene direction is highly important — and interdependent. First, some quick definitions:

  • Script: Voiceover and/or onscreen text

  • Scene direction: Written descriptions of what will be shown on-screen during each part of the script

Since the content and storyline are the backbones of any video or motion graphic, it’s best for scripting and scene direction to be a highly collaborative process. 

The team producing the work will need to elicit feedback from key stakeholders on the client-side. They’ll also probably involve as much of their own production team as possible during this phase. That means getting designers, content writers, researchers, animators, and project managers all in one room to brainstorm and plan. This approach ensures that the storyline touches upon key messages, is engaging, and plays well with the design and animation styles to come.

Storyboard

Upon approval of the scripting and scene direction, the team moves on to storyboarding. In this phase, the script and scene direction are combined with sketches that help bring them to life. 

Depending on a number of factors, including a budget, timeline, and chosen production process, the sketches may vary in complexity. They may be displayed scene-by-scene alongside the script and scene-direction notes. Or they may be animated, with very rough cuts of sound direction and/or voiceover to show timing. 

Likewise, in some scenarios, this may be the first time that key art direction elements like colors, fonts, and illustration styles are proposed — unless those decisions were established upfront.

In whatever form it takes, the storyboard gives the team something visual to react to. It ensures that the scene direction described in the previous phase is fully getting its message across. What’s happening on-screen is essential to telling the story in a way that engages your target audience — and you must keep them top-of-mind when reviewing. Personal preferences can come into play when reviewing any deliverable. But at the end of the day, your motion graphic needs to resonate with your audience more than anyone else.

As is the case at the scripting stage — and every stage in the motion-graphic production process — you’ll probably want to revise your storyboard at least once based on feedback to make sure you’re on the right track. If feedback is minimal, you may be able to move straight into the artwork phase and incorporate feedback then.


Artwork

Developing the artwork for a motion graphic is generally more time-intensive than any of the previous steps on their own. All the revisions and approvals up to this point — on the script, scene direction, sketches, and art direction — have ensured that the project is on the right path. Together, they add up to a sign-off that the team can now invest significant time into production.

Whether your creative team delivers 1 fully illustrated scene for you to give feedback on, more than a few, or the complete set of artwork for your motion graphic will be determined by many of the same factors as your storyboard’s format. No approach is wrong, so long as it’s thoroughly communicated and understood by all parties. 

That’s because once your motion graphic enters animation, any changes to what’s being shown will require not 1, but 2 time-consuming stages of editing: artwork edits, then animation edits. This can compromise deadlines and budgets. So always ensure that the artwork for your motion graphic meets your benchmarks for success before giving the thumbs-up to start the animation.


Voiceover

Visuals aren’t the only component of your video. The script developed at the start of the production process will often include a voiceover. This isn’t always the case — if your video is being developed for viewing on mute, the words may be communicated as on-screen text instead. But if your motion graphic is designed to be played with the volume up, a recorded voiceover maybe 1 component of the sound in your video. 

Selecting the right voiceover artist is critical to perfecting the overall tone of your video. The voiceover must appeal to your target audience, and it must match the art direction — which was also tailored to that audience. Should the narration of your story be lean and professional, or whimsical and exciting? Should you opt for a youthful sound or a mature voice? Low tones or high tones? Your production team will lead the way in sending you only the examples that will appeal to your audience so that you can make an informed choice. 

Animation

The animation phase is the final step in the visual design of your motion graphic. By this point, you’re confident and excited about the script, scene direction, art direction, and artwork. 

Among the most commonly requested elements to include in motion graphics is character animation. Some illustration styles are suited to character animation, but others are not — so whether you’re going to include animated characters must be decided early on. Your production team should discuss options for this with you at the style guide and/or storyboard phase, and again as artwork begins. Moving from a style that doesn’t support character animation to one that does will definitely increase the budget if it’s not requested until the artwork stage or later. Again, the team you’re working with should discuss all of this with you as early as the kickoff and/or scripting stages. 

As you watch the artwork come to life in animated scenes, you can suggest a variety of changes. But when you’re not an animator yourself, it can be difficult to know which changes are relatively easy to make, and which are more involved. Ask your creative partner to explain the scope of different types of changes so you can stick to your timeline and budget.

Custom Score and Sound Design

Up to this point in the process, your motion graphic has a carefully crafted script and scene direction, custom-made artwork, and unique animations. So why spoil all that custom work with stock music and uninspired sound design?

Your score and sound design should punctuate and emphasize your message. Even if your video will often be played on silent (such as at an expo booth), if it will ever be viewed in a sound-friendly setting, these custom details will only enhance the impact. A disharmonious score and clunky sound design are far worse than no score or sound at all.

Good Interaction Design Provides Feedback

While instant app’s response is the best, there are simply times when your app won’t be able to comply with the guidelines for speed. Delays are usually caused by slow loading times and latency issues. For such cases, you must reassure the users that the app is working on their request and that actual progress is being made.

Essentially, feedback answers questions across three categories:

  • Current Status: What’s happening?

  • Outcomes: What has just happened?

  • Future Status: What will happen next?

What is a Good Progress Indicator?

Good progress indicators always give some type of immediate feedback. They notify users that the app needs more time to process the user action, and tell (approximately) how much time it will take. They have two main advantages:

  • Reduce user’s uncertainty (app reassures the user that it’s working).

  • Offer a reason to wait and reduce users’ perception of time (app gives the user something to look at while waiting. Thus, makes users pay less attention to the wait itself).

A user’s wait time begins the moment when she clicks the button (initiates an action). Immediately, the system should give some visual feedback to communicate that it has received the request.

Use a progress indicator for any action that takes longer than about 1 second. For anything that takes less than 1 second to load, it is distracting to use an animation.

Types of Progress Indicators

Progress indicators could be determinate or indeterminate:

  • When indicators are determinate they indicate how long an operation will take when the percentage complete is detectable.

When indicators are indeterminate they request that the user waits while something finishes when it’s not necessary to indicate how long it will take.

Looped Animation

Showing an animated graphic on loop offers feedback that the system is working, but usually, doesn’t give enough information about how long the user will have to wait.

As a general rule, you should use looped animation only for fast actions (2–10 seconds). Making the user stare at a spinning wheel longer can increase bounce rates.

It can also be helpful to add additional clarity for the user by including text that explains why the user is waiting (e.g. “Loading comments…”).

Users Expectations

Default loading icons (like the iOS spinner of gray lines radiating from a central point) tend to have negative connotations. They serve a variety of operating system functions, indicating the status of everything from device boot to problems connecting to network or loading a data. Because of that, people don’t’ like to see only a loading spinner with no indication of progress or time.

Looped Animation Integration

You can integrate looped animation with existing controls, especially buttons. For Android applications, a circular loader may be integrated with a floating action button. The thought process here is to confirm that the submission was complete not necessarily the progress. That is shown through the completion of the circle.

Linear Animation

A determinate linear progress indicator should always fill from 0% to 100% and never decrease in value. For multiple operations happening in sequence, you should use the indicator to represent the progress as a whole, and not each individual operation.

Percent-Done Animation

Uncertain waits are longer than known, finite waits. Percent-done progress indicators are the most informative type of wait-animation feedback. They show the current progress, how much has already been accomplished, and how much is left. A percent-done indicator makes users understand how fast the action is being processed.

As a general rule, you should use percent-done animation for actions that take 10 seconds or more.

Provide a General Time Estimate

Don’t try to be exact, a simple, “This might take a minute” can be enough to inform the user and encourage them to wait it out.

Progressive Animation

Progress bars tell users how long an action is taking, but they’re not always correct. You can disguise small delays in your progress bar by starting the progressive animation slower and allow it to move faster as it approaches the end. The progress bar should never stop, otherwise, users will think the app froze.

Showing Steps

Instead of showing a percentage number, consider showing the number of steps. Users might not know how long each step lasts, but knowing the number of steps at least helps them form an estimate.

Skeleton Screens

You should always try to make the wait more pleasant if you can’t shorten the line. And wait-time is the right time for skeleton screens (a.k.a temporary information containers). Skeleton screens are another way to focus on progress instead of wait times. A skeleton screen is essentially a blank version of a page into which information is gradually loaded. Such action creates the sense that things are happening immediately as information is incrementally displayed on the screen.

Medium uses this trick, showing a simple wireframe as a placeholder, while the actual content loads. With such a screen, the focus is on content being loaded not the fact that it’s loading.

Don’t Use Static Progress Indicator

This group of indicators is represented by not moving image or text like “Loading…” or “Please wait…” to indicate that the request has been received. While any feedback is better than none, static indicators don’t offer enough information about what is happening and should be replaced with a more meaningful type of indicator for better UX.
